Eugene Thomas Kelliher

July 16, 1925 ~ May 1, 2020 (age 94)



KELLIHER, Eugene T. 94, of Spring Hill FL passed away Friday May 1, 2020 at home with family by his side.

Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife Dien Kelliher (nee Glenn) in 2008, his sons Timothy (2014) and Robert (2017), his daughter Linda Rhodes (2018) along with his sisters Catherine, Eleanor and Florence and his brother Raymond.

Gene was born on July 16, 1925 to Michael and Elizabeth and grew up in the Fernwood neighborhood in Chicago IL attending St. Margaret of Scotland elementary school and Fenger high school. 

Gene served in the United States Navy during World War II on the submarine USS Runner.  After his service he worked on the Belt Railroad for 37 years.

After marrying Dien in 1949 they raised their 5 children in Oak Lawn, IL before retiring to Spring Hill FL in 1987.

Known by Pa to his family, Gene loved having family visit, especially his grandchildren and great grandchild.  Visits would always include listening to Pa tell stories, Pa treating everyone to dinners out, playing games in the evening, and Pa watching the grandchildren play in the pool.

Gene was an active member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II and volunteered many hours at St. Vincent DePaul and St. Frances Cabrini Men’s Club in Spring Hill FL, putting his expert handyman skills to use.

Gene is survived by brothers Robert and Neal, daughters Margaret Hobbs and Susan Besenhofer, along with grandchildren Michelle Ferrin, Kristina Kelliher, Megan Hamilton, Dean Hobbs, Elizabeth Besenhofer, and James Besenhofer and great granddaughter Claire Ferrin.
