Charles Wayne DesChamps

November 19, 1935 ~ April 14, 2022 (age 86)

Obituary

DesCHAMPS, Charles “Wayne”, 86, of Brooksville, Florida, passed away Thursday, April 14, 2022 at Advent Health Dade City.

He was born November 19, 1935 in Tampa, Florida and came to Brooksville 35 years ago.  Wayne proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict as a mechanic.  He faithfully served his community as a police officer and retiring as Corporal for the Tampa Police Department.  He was the first officer promoted to the newly created Corporal position in 1966.  He was the owner and operator of the well-known DesChamps Corner General Store in Brooksville for many years.

He met the love of his life, Carol, when he set up a date with another waitress who stood him up and he offered Carol a ride home.  They became a couple and every time he went back to that diner the staff would not speak to him as Carol had claimed him and she threatened to kick their butts if they talked to him.  He was a real car guy, his favorite being the ‘57 Chevy, but also had a love for Volkswagens.  He also loved ice cream, Sonny’s BBQ, boating, and above all else, he loved his family.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Carol I.(Bates) DesChamps and his parents, Charles and Lillie (Mullis) DesChamps.  He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald “RD” Ronnie & Janalee DesChamps and Charles Dean & Debbie Deschamps, all of Brooksville, Florida; brother, Nelson DesChamps of Gainesboro, Tennessee; his twin sister, Nola Ethridge and his sister, Connie Brewster, both of Cookeville, Tennessee; granddaughters, Shauna DesChamps (Dale Frix) of Dade City, Florida, Desiree Whatley (Timothy), and Krista DesChamps of Brooksville, Florida; grandson, Dustin DesChamps (Shelly) of Brooksville, Florida; great-grandchildren, Landon, Delaina, Chase, Cole, and Maverick.
