Maryetta Jayne Shearer Vaughn
March 8, 1924 – May 15, 2018
Died of heart failure at Brooksville Healthcare Center. Born in Waynesboro, PA to the late Joseph Brown Shearer and Mary Bertha Hoffman Shearer, she attended Franklin County Schools where, in 1938, she was the only student in county history to achieve a perfect score on the high school mathematics entrance exam. She was an honor graduate of Greencastle High School where she received distinguished achievement awards in French and math. During WWII she was employed by Letterkenny Ordinance Depot in Chambersburg, PA.
She married Irvin Willis Vaughn and lived for a short time in Tampa and Dade City, FL before moving permanently to Brooksville, FL. She was a member of the Baptist faith, and served the First Baptist Church of Brooksville as Superintendant of Sunday School and Principal of Vacation Bible School.
From 1962-1968 she was Assistant County Librarian at Lykes Memorial County Library. After leaving the library, she worked as a teller at First National Bank of Brooksville retiring as Assistant Cashier from what now is known as Bank of America. She had been a cattle rancher since 1967.
For eighteen years she was a volunteer at Lykes Memorial Hospital where she was a “Pink Lady” and Membership Chairperson of the Hospital Volunteers. In 1975 she was awarded the Service to Mankind Award by the Brooksville Sertoma Club.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Irvin Willis Vaughn, by her son, Robert Irvin Vaughn, infant grandchild, Jeffrey Andrew Vaughn, two brothers, Harry Donald Kaufman (Waynesboro, PA) and Richard Ernest Shearer (St. Thomas, PA), two sisters, Betty Louise Fittry (Greencastle, PA) and Margaret Irene Reichard (Greencastle. PA). She is survived by one brother, Joseph Wesley Shearer (Greencastle, PA), by her daughters: Dona D. Vaughn (Ron Raines), New York, NY, Faye Stine (Allen), Gainesville, FL, Linda Knaust (Peter), Bermuda Dunes, CA, Carol Flynn (David), Hudson, FL, Cheryl Elliott, Brooksville, FL, ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, and one step-great-great-grandchild.
A Visitation for family and friends will be held from 1:00pm-2:00pm, Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Merritt Funeral Home, Brooksville Chapel, where Funeral Services will begin at 2:00pm. Burial will follow at Brooksville Cemetery.
