BILLING, Gary Phillip, 77, Retired Captain of Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, passed away on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at the HPH Hospice Care Center in Brooksville, FL. 

He was born September 5, 1940 in Sidney, Ohio and moved to St. Petersburg, FL where he was a lifelong resident of Pinellas County until he retired to his “cabin” in the woods of Brooksville to join his buddy Don Shields pursuing the hunting and fishing and traveling they both loved. 

Captain Billing served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 6 years and protected the community for 34 years with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office with dignity and respect.  He was chosen to attend the National Academy of the FBI, an honor only 2% of officers in the nation attend.  He was a member of National Law Enforcement Association Officers Memorial, Lifetime Honorary Member of Florida Sheriff’s Association, The Fraternal Order of Police, a 10 Gallon Blood Donor, played in the Gold Shield Charity Golf Tournament for Fallen Officers every year and was a parishioner of St. Anthony the Abbot Catholic Church. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lauretta and Frank Ireland and Ralph Eugene Billing and his brother, Jacob Billing together with many aunts and uncles and cousins all from Ohio … and his lifelong best friend, hunting and fishing and traveling buddy, Chief Deputy Don Shields. 

He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 58+ years: Phoebe Ruth Cupples Billing and their daughters and sons-in-law: Lisa & Jay D’Urso of Bradenton, FL and Rene’ & John Clayton of St. Cloud, FL; brother: Michael Ireland of St. Petersburg, FL; nephew: Ryan Ireland of St. Petersburg, FL; sisters: Carol Billing McClain, Candy Billing Alexander, Chery Billing and Pam Billing Gladura; and many nieces and nephews all of Ohio; grandchildren: Zac D’Urso, Madison Clayton and Kennedy Clayton; and the Shields boys who were like sons … Kenneth, Kris, and Kevin.

A Gathering for family and friends will be held from 11:00am-1:00pm, Saturday, August 4, 2018 at Merritt Funeral Home, Brooksville Chapel.  A Graveside Ceremony will take place at 11:00am, Saturday, August 11, 2018 at Memorial Park Cemetery St. Petersburg, 5750 49th Street North, St. Petersburg, Florida 33709.
